A Caregiver and Child Learning Community
According to Montessori understanding, the first six years of life are the most fundamental to the development of human beings and the realization of their fullest potential. During this time, the infant and child’s physical development is phenomenal and inspires our care and attention.
Montessori Playgroups at Sophia Rose Montessori provide parents and caregivers with a unique opportunity to engage with their children as they exercise their independence by exploring this specially prepared environment. Furniture and materials in the room are carefully chosen and designed to aid in the development of movement and coordination, independence, language, self-discipline, and cognitive skills.
The intent of each Parent-Infant, Toddler, and Preschool class, is to support your important role as your child’s first teacher. Through observation and interaction, you will witness the natural development of your child.
All classes are facilitated by Mia Aguilar, an experienced, Montessori-trained teacher who serves as a guide and mentor for parents and children. She introduces activities to infants, children and parents, helping the child develop social skills, communication and a sense of belonging to a group.
These classes also help to deepen understanding of Montessori philosophy and its application in the home. Through both interaction and observation, parents and caregivers gain valuable insight regarding their infant and child’s path of development.
As part of each Montessori Playgroup 8-week course, parents gather each month for a discussion group outside of classroom time. We call this, the “Parent Circle”. This session features an overview and discussion of a topic pertaining to child development, parenting, and serves as a forum for parents to share and exchange information with each other.
Topics may include:
Along with the selected 8-week classes and the monthly discussion group, registered families receive an Observation Journal, and the book, “The Montessori Toddler” by Simone Davies or “How to Raise an Amazing Child the Montessori Way” by Tim Seldin. You can also request a different Montessori book if you already have these.

Hello! My name is Mia. I am a Montessorian mom of a 2 year old girl called Sophia Rose, for which I named the playgroup after. She is my inspiration throughout this whole journey. I came across Maria Montessori and her teachings during pregnancy with Sophia and instantly fell in love with the method. The principles of following and respecting the child was a profound discovery, and our family has been implementing a Montessori-inspired lifestyle ever since.
The method deeply resonated with me that I decided to further my journey and take Montessori teacher training. My background includes an AMI (Association Montessori Internationale) Assistant Teacher 3-6 credential, Early Childhood Educator Level 1 in Alberta, Parent-Infant and Child Class Facilitator, and Certified Positive Discipline Parent Educator. I am a lifelong learner and constantly taking more training in my journey moving forward. I am also a Volunteer Teacher in various Montessori schools in Edmonton, and I have Childcare CPR certificate and police clearance.
I decided to hold Montessori-based Caregiver-Parent-Infant and Child classes to create a community of families that support each other in learning with our children. In this post-pandemic world, I deeply believe in the remarkable value of having a supportive community. It is something that I seek as a parent both for myself and my child, and I am hoping share a little more Montessori with other parents and their children.

While we continue to navigate during this pandemic there are a few considerations for our in-person playgroups:
In consideration of COVID-19 and the extra precautions with illness, I will offer one make up class. We will work together to find an appropriate time for you to make-up a class.
I will not be offering make-up classes due to travel. Please make attempts to attend class accordingly.
